TOSOH EcoSEC 8320 GPC
GENERAL INFORMATION | STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Location: Havemeyer 544
The Tosoh EcoSEC 8320 is a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) system, also known as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), used to determine the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers and macromolecules. This instrument separates molecules based on their hydrodynamic size as they pass through porous gel columns, with larger molecules eluting first and smaller molecules eluting later. The system features both sample and reference columns for high baseline stability, along with integrated pump, autosampler, and multiple detectors including refractive index (RI) and single-wavelength UV absorption detectors for comprehensive polymer characterization. The standard mobile phase is DMF (stabilized with LiBr), other solvents including Chloroform and THF are available upon request.
The column configuration includes:
Guard column for the TSKgel series
TSKgel SuperH5000
TSKgel SuperH4000
TSKgel SuperH3000
TSKgel SuperH-RC (reference column).
The system is commonly used for analyzing synthetic polymers, natural polymers, and oligomers to determine key parameters such as number-average molecular weight (Mn), weight-average molecular weight (Mw), and polydispersity index (PDI). Applications include quality control of polymer products, monitoring polymerization reactions, studying polymer degradation, and characterizing materials such as plastics, resins, adhesives, and biopolymers.
