Professor Katayun (Katy) Barmak

CNI is saddened to join the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, as well as the broader Columbia University community, in mourning the loss of Professor Katayun (Katy) Barmak, the Philips Electronics Professor of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics and CNI Faculty member.

Professor Barmak was integral as an IRG1 co-lead for the Columbia University MRSEC, one of the major interdisciplinary research centers administered by CNI. She guided the world-leading work of the IRG in materials synthesis, and characterization of these materials by electron microscopy. Professor Barmak was also recently named a 2026 Materials Research Society (MRS) Fellow, recognized “For outstanding contributions to our understanding of solid state phase transformations and structure evolution of metallic films for electronic and magnetic applications, and for dedicated service to the materials community.”

CNI extends its deepest condolences to Professor Barmak’s family, friends and colleagues at this challenging time.

 An additional tribute to Professor Barmak can be found in the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. A Memorial Service for the Columbia community is planned for Thursday, May 7th, at 4:30 PM in St. Paul's Chapel.
