In Memoriam: Professor Louis Brus (1943-2026)

It is with tremendous sadness that CNI joins the broader Columbia University community in mourning the passing of Louis Brus, the Samuel Latham Mitchill Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry, 2023 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and CNI Faculty member.
Professor Brus was a giant in the fields of chemical physics and nanoscience. His discovery of, and research on, quantum dots in liquids underpinned numerous technological advancements, and was recognized in 2023 with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Professor Brus’s transformational discoveries also forged new directions in the field of nanotechnology which alongside his advocacy for basic science research represent a major cornerstone on which CNI was founded.
CNI offers its condolences to Professor Brus’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
