Columbia University wins third National Science Foundation Materials Research Science and Engineering Center

Columbia’s NSF MRSEC for Advanced Electronic Materials

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that Columbia University has been awarded $18 million for a new Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). The new MRSEC for Advanced Electronic Materials (AEM), under the direction of CNI Professors Colin Nuckolls (Director) and Xiaoyang Zhu (Associate Director), represents the third consecutive time that Columbia has successfully won an NSF MRSEC center grant.

The NSF supports a variety of materials research topics through MRSEC centers across the United States. Following the 2026 competition, $108 million in research funding was announced for 6 centers, including Columbia University, Harvard University, MIT, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Princeton University and UC San Diego.
