New York, NY — April 1, 2026 — The Columbia Nano Initiative (CNI) is pleased to announce the official launch of NEMO, a new web-based platform designed to manage laboratory access, equipment reservations, and user activity across its core research facilities.

Effective today, NEMO replaces the previous system and will serve as the central hub for all operations within the Nanofabrication Cleanroom, Shared Materials Characterization Lab (SCML), and Electron Microscopy (EM) facilities.

NEMO introduces a modern, integrated approach to lab management, enabling researchers to seamlessly reserve instruments, complete required training, manage access permissions, and track usage. The platform is designed to improve transparency, efficiency, and consistency across all CNI labs, reflecting best practices in shared user facility operations .

“The transition to NEMO represents a significant step forward in how we support research at CNI,” said Jacob Trevino, Senior Director of CNI Labs. “This system allows us to better manage shared resources while providing a more intuitive and streamlined experience for our users.”

The move to NEMO also positions CNI within a broader, modern ecosystem of shared user facilities. By adopting a platform used across leading research institutions, CNI is enabling new opportunities for collaboration and resource sharing beyond Columbia.

As an early example, CNI has already established a connection with the University of Pennsylvania’s Singh Center for Nanotechnology through the NEMO Hydra network, allowing users to more easily discover and access capabilities across institutions. The Hydra portal can be accessed here: https://marquis-hydra.atlantislabs.io/

With NEMO now fully deployed, all laboratory reservations, access permissions, and usage tracking are managed through a single, unified system, simplifying workflows for both users and staff while improving visibility into facility operations.

Users can access the system at: https://nemo.cni.columbia.edu/

All users are required to log in using their Columbia credentials and ensure their training and qualifications are up to date before reserving equipment.

CNI encourages all users to review the available user guide and training materials to become familiar with the new system. Support is available for any issues related to login, access, or qualifications.

The launch of NEMO reflects CNI’s continued commitment to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure and operational support for cutting-edge research in nanoscience and engineering.
